East Side Capital Improvements
Phase Three: Locker Room Renovations
With the completion of the Lap Pool & Natatorium Renovation Project, we have now started Phase Three of our Capital Improvements at the East Side Branch: Locker Room Improvements. Phase Three will allow us to provide our members & program participants barrier free accessibility, improved privacy, better access to the pool, and a safer environment for all.
Part Three is scheduled from January 24 – June 23 and affects the following areas:
There will be no access to the Girls, Boys & Family Locker Rooms. To get to the Lap Pool, you will have to go to the main hallway, go through the door at the end and up one flight of stairs to the pool.
During construction, there will be no handicapped accessible restrooms at the main building at our East Side Branch. These facilities are available at the Kinderhouse at 16 Wallace Street. Please inform our Welcome Center staff if you are in need of the handicapped accessible restroom and they will be able to direct you to the Kinderhouse. We encourage members who need these facilities to use the West Side Branch.
For swimming purposes, showers will be available in our Teaching Pool, as well as our Men’s & Women’s Locker Room. We encourage all visitors to shower at home, if possible. If you are bringing a child that is of the opposite gender, we ask that you use the Teaching Pool shower by making that request with the Welcome Center.
The Men’s & Women’s Locker Rooms will be designated for ALL AGES. Children under the age of 12 MUST be accompanied by a parent or guardian to use the locker room. If you are bringing a child that is of the opposite gender or are in need of a handicap accessible shower, we ask that you use the Teaching Pool shower by making that request with the Welcome Center.
The saunas are for adults who are at least 18 years of age. Children under the age of 18 are unable to use this amenity for any reason, even if accompanied by a parent or guardian. Saunas will be offline & unavailable on weekends and from 2:00PM to close during the week to ensure the safety of our members. The back parking lot & exit to Wallace Street is CLOSED. Our entrance on South Elm Street will be used for exiting as well during construction. Please be cautious when using the parking lot as traffic flows both ways instead of one way. Additional parking is available at Doolittle Park.

Project Updates
Phase Two: Lap Pool & Natatorium Renovation
We’re happy to announce the Wallingford Family YMCA East Side Lap Pool will reopen on February 6, 2023! There is additional work on the exterior of the natatorium that will continue for the next few weeks, but the pool will be ready for splashing next Monday at 5:00AM.
Thanks again to the State of Connecticut Department of Economic and Community Development and the advocacy of State Representatives Mary Mushinsky, Vinny Candelora, Liz Linehan, Craig Fishbein and Senator Paul Cicarella, along with corporate & community donations, that made our $1.2m East Side Natatorium & Lap Pool Renovation Project a reality.
We would also like to thank our friends & partners at Choate Rosemary Hall for allowing us this opportunity to continue serving our Y members during construction and the other local Y’s who opened their doors to our lap swimmers in the evening.
