When people ask what the “new” YMCA will be like and when it will be complete, most don’t fully realize the work and partnership surrounding this project. The vision and the research began in 2010 when the East Side Branch was becoming overcrowded. With youth classes needing more space, group fitness classes at standing room only, and the pool in high demand, leaders of the YMCA were looking for solutions. The Y needed to take care of our members, both in terms of expansion and also, with an increased number of members with disabilities, in terms of making the Y accessible to all. Thus began a decade of research and preparation, putting measures in place for the launch of a capital campaign to renovate and expand two facilities in Wallingford, ensuring that the needs of the community will be met for a long time to come.
