Summer is a time for family fun, sunshine, and plenty of water activities. Whether you’re splashing around at the pool, taking a dip in a nearby lake, or planning a trip to the beach, water can offer endless enjoyment. But when it comes to water activities, safety is key.
At the Wallingford Family YMCA, we believe that creating safe memories around water starts with awareness and preparation. To help families like yours enjoy water activities worry-free, we’ve compiled some simple yet essential water-safety guidelines. Whether you’re a parent, a grandparent, or just someone who enjoys swimming, these tips can make all the difference.
The number one rule of water safety is simple but crucial: never swim alone. Whether you’re a seasoned swimmer or just starting to learn, always have someone nearby. This is especially important in natural water settings like oceans or lakes, where unpredictable currents and other factors can make swimming dangerous.
If you’re swimming with kids, keep extra close supervision. Young children or inexperienced swimmers are safer when accompanied by an adult within arm’s reach.
Accidents happen in seconds, but supervision saves lives. Even if your child is a confident swimmer, maintain constant, active supervision. Put away distractions like phones or books to stay focused. When supervising a group of kids, consider having a “Water Watcher”—an adult assigned to watch the water without interruption. Rotate this role to keep everyone fresh and alert.
Remember, flotation devices like water wings or pool noodles aren’t safety tools. They don’t replace dedicated adult attention!
Emergencies can happen despite the best precautions, but knowing CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) can turn a potentially tragic situation into a life-saving moment. Having CPR training gives you the confidence to respond quickly should someone experience a near-drowning incident.
Life jackets aren’t just for boats! They are essential for anyone who isn’t a strong swimmer or is venturing into deeper or unpredictable waters, like a lake or the ocean. They’re especially critical for young children or anyone participating in water sports like kayaking or jet skiing.
Natural water settings like beaches, lakes, and rivers come with unique challenges. From swift currents to sudden drop-offs and debris, it’s important to stay vigilant in these environments. Learn about water conditions before heading out, and when at the beach, always swim within sight of a lifeguard.
Even pools can have hidden dangers, like slippery surfaces. Be mindful of your surroundings and address any potential hazards before jumping in.
One of the best ways to bolster water safety is by enrolling in swimming lessons. At the Wallingford Family YMCA, we believe water safety starts with strong swimming skills. Our expert instructors offer classes for all ages and skill levels, from toddlers learning to float to adults seeking confidence in the water.
Through our swim programs, participants develop swim skills and the knowledge of how to act safely in and around water. It’s never too early or too late to learn!
